Briana West Artist

Hi, I'm Briana.

Painter and instructor, Los Angeles

I've been painting for more than 30 years, but finding my own voice took time. Like many painters, I began by trying to get everything right. My work was careful and controlled. Over the years, I became less interested in describing every detail and more interested in what makes a painting feel alive: light, color, movement, and the energy of the brushstroke.

Learning to paint loosely changed everything for me. It wasn't about becoming careless or abandoning technique. It was about knowing what matters, simplifying what doesn't, and allowing the painting to breathe. That approach has become the foundation of the way I paint today.

My Work

I paint full time in oils and acrylics, creating landscapes, florals, and figurative work with an emphasis on expressive color and brushwork. My paintings live somewhere between observation and interpretation. I'm less interested in reproducing exactly what I see than in capturing what made me want to paint it in the first place.

My original paintings have been exhibited and collected, but what continues to excite me most is the process itself: starting with a blank surface and watching color, shape, and light gradually become something that feels alive.

"Loose painting can look effortless. Learning when to simplify, when to make a mark, and when to leave it alone took years. Now I love sharing that process with others."

Teaching

Teaching grew naturally out of my own painting practice. I know how easy it is to overthink every detail or worry about making the “right” brushstroke. My goal is to take some of that pressure away and guide students through a clear, approachable process that builds confidence along the way. With that foundation, they can begin to trust their instincts, develop their own artistic voice, and create paintings that feel like their own.

In my online courses, I break my process into clear, manageable steps. You'll see how I simplify a reference, mix my colors, build a painting from the first layer to the final marks, and keep the brushwork loose and expressive.

The goal isn't simply to finish the painting in the lesson. It's to learn a method you can take back to your own easel and use again and again. Explore my courses →
